n "Study in Scarlet" - Arthur Conan Doyle
Synopsis:
"The publication in 1887 of STUDY IN SCARLET marked the first appearance of legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, a character who would end up becoming one of the most famous not only in the mystery novel, but the entire history of literature. Straddling the detective genre, the historical reconstruction and adventure story, the novel on which Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) raises and solves the mystery unfolds through effective técnicanarrativa revolves around a crime committed in London and whose story is related to the Mormon sect and the state of Utah. "
I love detectives. I have many books about them, but curiously did not have one of the quintessential detective Sherlock Holmes. So, taking advantage of an offer, I got two copies of the famous researcher.
Compared with those of Agatha Christie I can say that, at least in this first part, go hand in hand, but I lean more to the Agatha. Of course I've only read two books in the series of Sherlock Holmes and I have hard to compare. As Poirot, Holmes is very vain. But the charm of Poirot not see it on Holmes. While Holmes indeed seems safer all, is more analytical, and Poirot is flying blind in case succeeds, and sometimes it does. It seems clear that only because, as you will know who may know the character, he knows very well use his little gray cells. Is that why I lean more to Poirot, a comedic character who is willing, despite his blunders.
Well, this review is not intended to be a Sherlock Holmes vs. Hercule Poirot, so returning to Study in Scarlet is to say it was the first novel Arthur Conan Doyle in which appears the famous detective. It was written in 1887 and it tells a story divided into two very different but linked together. The first part, narrated by Watson, is entitled reprint of the memoirs of John H. Watson, MD and retired Medical Corps of the British Army. This part tells how Watson and Sherlock are known and move to the same house in the 221, Baker Street. At the same time, recounts the discovery of a corpse in an abandoned house, for which there is only single track resolution, RACHE word written in blood on a wall. Sherlock Holmes will then have the opportunity to run their deductive skills.
The second part, entitled The land of saints, it seems a separate story but later discover the bond that unites them.
Personally, though I think a well written book, infinitely more than those of Agatha, I must say, I found the story weak. Maybe that second part that breaks with the tone of the novel, and because the character of Sherlock just appears. But I think a book out, simply because it is presented to these two unique characters that have inspired both in film and literature.
I copy a fragment as defined Sherlock Watson:
